Frequently Asked Questions

Usually not. Most of our lights are supplied without bulbs, so you can choose the brightness and colour you like. Check Bulbs in the Specifications on each product page. If a light has integrated LED, the LEDs are built in and you don't need any bulbs at all.
Match the cap type shown in the Specifications: E14 (small screw), E27 (large screw), B22 (bayonet) or G9 (small capsule). The wattage listed is the maximum the fitting can safely take. An LED bulb uses a fraction of that, so any LED with the right cap is fine.
For a cosy, flattering light in living rooms and bedrooms, go for warm white (2700–3000K). Clear glass shades look best with decorative filament bulbs, and crystal chandeliers sparkle most with clear candle bulbs. Smart bulbs work too. Just don't put them on a dimmer switch.
The Specifications on each product page tell you whether the light is dimmable. If it is, you'll need dimmable LED bulbs and an LED-compatible (trailing edge) dimmer switch.
Most flickering, buzzing or lights that won't dim right down come from older dimmers made for halogen bulbs, or from too little load on the dimmer, for example a few low-watt LEDs on a big dimmer. Swapping to an LED-rated dimmer usually fixes it. Integrated LED lights marked as dimmable need a trailing edge dimmer. Lights marked non-dimmable should never be connected to a dimmer.
Here's a quick rule of thumb: add your room's length and width in metres, then multiply by 8. That gives you roughly the right diameter in centimetres. For example, a 4 m × 5 m room suits a light of about 70 cm across.
Over a dining table, aim for a light around half to two-thirds the width of the table. Every product page has a Size & Fit section with the full dimensions. It's worth checking them with a tape measure before you order, because lights can look bigger or smaller in photos.
In walkways, leave at least 2.1 m from the floor to the bottom of the light. Over a dining table, the bottom of the light usually looks best 75–85 cm above the tabletop. The Size & Fit section shows the minimum and maximum drop, and roughly how much clearance you'll have under a standard 2.4 m ceiling.
Most of our pendants are adjustable. Your electrician can shorten a chain, rod or cable to suit your ceiling when it's fitted. For low ceilings, choose a flush or semi-flush light instead.
The weight of every light is listed in its Specifications. Lighter pendants can hang from a standard ceiling point. Heavier chandeliers (as a guide, anything over about 5 kg) should be fixed securely into a ceiling joist or a timber noggin, not just plasterboard. Your electrician will check this when fitting.
Yes, we always recommend a qualified electrician. The manufacturers also require one for their warranty to be valid. Lights marked Class I must be connected to earth, and some older homes don't have an earth at the ceiling point. Class II lights are double insulated and don't need one. You'll find this under Electrical in the Specifications.
Before your electrician arrives, unpack everything and check the parts against the instructions so the job isn't held up.
Only if it has a suitable IP rating. Look for IP44 or higher in the Specifications. Lights rated IP20 must stay outside the bathroom zones. Where we know the zone a light is approved for (for example zone 2), we show it next to the IP rating. Your electrician should always confirm the zones in your bathroom before fitting.

The light must be installed by a qualified electrician. Fair wear and tear, misuse and incorrect fitting aren't covered, and some manufacturers exclude glass and crystal parts, so please check these carefully on arrival. None of this affects your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
